How to Change Your Own Oil Without Stripping Your Pan

When I was young I did what most people do — I took my cars to the quick oil-change places. Then one day one of them cranked the drain plug down so hard they stripped the threads right out of the oil pan on my 1990 Honda Civic. There's no fixing that — the whole pan had to come off and be replaced. It set me back about $450, which for a broke young guy at the time was a small fortune. That was the day I decided I'd rather do it myself and know it was done right. The good news: an oil change is one of the easiest jobs on a car — and if you respect the one thing those shops got lazy about (torque), you'll never end up where I did.
You don't need a jack — just a set of ramps
For an oil change you don't need to lift the car at all. Drive up onto a set of ramps and you've got safe, stable access to the drain plug and filter without ever putting a jack — or your body — under a suspended car. For a quick job like this it's faster and, honestly, safer than jack-and-stands.
A few tips:
- I like resin (plastic) ramps over steel ones. They're lighter to move, they grip the concrete instead of sliding out from under the tire the way metal ramps can on a smooth garage floor, and they won't rust or scratch. (Chock the rear wheels anyway.)
- Check the ramp's weight rating covers your vehicle, and if you have a low front bumper, look for low-profile / curved ramps so you don't scrape the front end driving up.
- Drive up slowly and straight, put it in Park (or in gear for a manual), set the parking brake, and chock the wheels still on the ground before you get under it.
Watch for the underbody shield
A lot of newer cars have a plastic or composite skid plate / splash shield covering the underside, and the drain plug and filter live behind it. Two ways in:
- Look for an access panel first. Many shields have a small cut-out or hinged flap, usually right below the oil drain plug (sometimes a second one at the filter). If yours has one, you may not have to drop the whole shield at all.
- Otherwise, remove the shield. It's usually held on with a mix of a few bolts and plastic push-rivets. The rivets are the trick: pop the center pin up and out first — a trim tool or a small flat screwdriver under the head lifts it — and then the whole rivet body pulls out. Drop them in a cup so you don't lose any. Once the fasteners are out, the shield comes down and the oil pan and filter are right there. Reverse it going back on: seat the rivet body in the hole, then press the center pin flush to lock it.
Warm it up (a little) and drain
Run the engine for a couple of minutes first — warm oil flows out faster and carries more of the gunk with it. Warm, not scorching hot; you don't want to burn yourself on the plug or the exhaust. Slide your drain pan under the plug, break the plug loose with a wrench, then spin it out by hand and let it drain fully.
Don't forget the crush washer
Most drain plugs seal with a crush washer — a soft aluminum or copper ring that squishes flat to make a tight seal. It's designed to deform once. Reuse an already-flattened one and you'll often get a slow drip. Replace it (or at least inspect it) every change — they cost pennies, and a fresh one is cheap insurance against a leak. Match the washer to your plug size; a lot of quality filters come with one in the box.
Torque matters — this is the part that saved me
Here's the whole reason I do my own oil now. Overtighten the drain plug and you strip the pan — especially the soft aluminum pans on a lot of modern cars — which is exactly what happened to my Civic. Undertighten it and it weeps or backs out. The fix is simple:
- Start the plug by hand. Thread it in with your fingers first so you know it isn't cross-threaded. If it doesn't spin in easily, back it out and try again — never force it.
- Torque it to spec with a torque wrench, not by "feel." Most drain plugs land around 25–30 ft-lb, but check your manual — it varies, and aluminum pans are usually lower. That one habit — hand-start, then torque — is the difference between a five-minute job and a $450 oil pan.
The oil filter
Two things to know before you touch the filter: where it is, and what type it is.
Location — mind the gush. On most engines the filter sits sideways, low on the block — usually just above where the oil pan meets the engine — so the moment you break the seal, oil runs down the side and off the edge, not straight down. Position your drain pan to catch that, not just the drain plug. (A few engines mount the filter vertically, pointing down — with the open end facing up like that, the canister holds its oil as you spin it off, so it's a clean, no-drip job. But sideways is the norm, so plan for the mess.)
Spin-on filters — the common, easy kind. The self-contained metal canister you just spin off and on:
- Spin the old one off and let it drain into your pan.
- Wipe the sealing surface clean and make sure the old rubber gasket came off with the filter — an old gasket left stuck to the engine, doubled up with the new one, is a classic blowout.
- Wipe a dab of fresh oil on the new filter's gasket, spin it on by hand until it seats, then about three-quarters of a turn more — hand-tight, not gorilla-tight. Overtightening is how you round a filter off and can't get it back off next time.
Cartridge (cap-style) filters — common on Toyotas and a lot of European cars. Instead of a spin-on can, there's a housing with a cap you unscrew (this is where you need a cap-style wrench sized to your housing). Inside is a replaceable paper cartridge:
- Unscrew the cap, pull the old cartridge, drop in the new one.
- Replace the O-ring(s) on the cap — they come with the new filter. Lube the new O-rings with fresh oil, slide them over the threads, and make sure each one seats fully in its groove before the cap goes back on. A pinched or wrong-size O-ring is an instant leak.
- Thread the cap on and torque it to spec.
On filter wrenches: my go-to is a metal swivel-strap wrench — it grips hard and lasts. I stay away from the rubber-strap ones; they crack, break, and never seem to grip well. If your car has a cap-style housing, you'll want the matching cap wrench for it too.
Fill, run, and check
With the drain plug and filter back in, fill with the right grade and amount for your engine. Not sure how much yours takes? Look up your vehicle's oil type and capacity — BoxKitz lists it per engine — so you're not guessing at the parts counter.
A trick I use: pre-measure the oil in a clean, clear jug (an empty plastic juice jug is perfect) so you pour in exactly the right amount and never overfill. Use a funnel to keep it in the filler neck and off the hot engine. Then start it, let it idle, and check under the car for leaks at the plug and filter. Shut it off, wait a minute, and check the dipstick — top up to the full mark if needed.
Recycle the old oil and filter — don't dump it
Used oil is nasty stuff — a single oil change can foul a huge amount of water — and pouring it down a drain, on the ground, or into the trash is illegal and a fine waiting to happen. Doing it right is easy and free:
- Collect the old oil in a clean, sealable container. The jugs your new oil came in work perfectly.
- Drain the filter before recycling it — set it open-side-down over your drain pan for a few hours, or puncture the dome. A drained filter is recyclable steel.
- Drop both off free at most auto parts stores — AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance, NAPA and Canadian Tire all take used oil and filters at no charge (call ahead; usually up to ~20 L / 5 gal a visit). Municipal eco-stations / household-hazardous-waste depots take them too.
- Find a spot: in the US, search Earth911; in Canada, use your province's used-oil program — in Alberta that's the ARMA Depot Finder, with ~210 sites including city eco-stations.
So yes, "the dump" works if your municipal site accepts it — but it's often easiest to drop it at the parts store when you go to grab your next filter.
